SEATON SEAFRONT
Site:
Seaton is a small town located at the mouth of the River Axe in South Devon. The seafront is set within a Conservation Area and is bordered on both sides by the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Coastline. Despite being a beautiful mile-long beach, the seafront promenade is met with busy roads, dilapidated materials and a range of architectural styles.
Brief:
Provide the first stages of a master plan for comprehensive improvements to the seafront esplanade.
Result:
Working as part of the design team at Architectural Thread; we conducted a series of public consultation meetings and exhibitions to raise awareness and opinions of the design.
Despite the uncomely decaying concrete and rundown public spaces, Seaton’s seafront remains a vibrant source of local involvement. By pedestrianising the promenade the design allows people to move freely about the spaces.
Multiple levels were designed around the design concept of layering; inspired by the strata of the adjacent cliff landscape; allowing an array of vantage points and social spaces. A playful response to the coastlines rock formations allows for a geometric pattern to make up seating, auditorium and play spaces.
Pedestrianised esplanade running the length of the seafront. Redesigning of moridunum, allowing for cafe and commercial units to be constructed.
